Babeasca Gri
Babeasca Gri
A rare indigenous Romanian grape with a fresh, delicate character
Babeasca Gri is a traditional Romanian grape variety, cultivated primarily in Moldova and in selected vineyards of southern and eastern Romania.
Despite its name, which refers to the greyish colour of the grape skins, Babeasca Gri is principally used to produce white wines distinguished by freshness, delicacy and an approachable aromatic profile.
Typical expressions combine aromas of peach, delicate fruit, citrus and white flowers, producing lively wines that reflect both the variety and the conditions of the vineyards in which it is grown.
Babeasca Gri in Romania
Around 294 hectares of Babeasca Gri are cultivated in Romania. Although its vineyard area remains relatively small, the variety forms part of the country's distinctive heritage of indigenous grapes and continues to be preserved by Romanian growers and winemakers.
Babeasca Gri is found particularly in Moldova, while plantings can also be found in Muntenia and Dobrogea. The different soils, exposures and microclimates of these regions allow the grape to develop subtly different expressions.
The variety generally produces fresh, light to medium-bodied wines with moderate aromatic intensity and an attractive balance between ripe fruit and refreshing acidity. Careful vineyard management and modern cellar techniques can bring greater precision and definition to its naturally delicate character.
With growing interest in Romania's native grape varieties, Babeasca Gri offers producers an opportunity to create wines with a clear local identity and provides wine lovers with another perspective on the diversity of Romanian viticulture.
