Babeasca Neagra is cultivated on more than 6,000 hectares in Romania and remains one of the country's important traditional red grape varieties. Its strongest historical association is with Moldova, particularly the vineyards of Nicoresti and Vrancea.

Important plantings can also be found in Odobesti, Cotesti and Panciu. The variety has also travelled beyond Romania and is known under different names in neighbouring wine cultures.

Babeasca Neagra generally produces wines with moderate alcohol, refreshing acidity and relatively gentle tannins. Depending on vineyard conditions and winemaking, aromas can range from sour cherries and plums to blackcurrant, dried fruit, flowers and subtle earthy or spicy notes.

The variety is also successfully cultivated in Sarica Niculitel, where the warmer Dobrogea climate can give the wines additional ripeness while preserving the characteristic freshness that defines Babeasca Neagra.
