Cadarca
Cadarca
A historic red grape deeply connected with western Romania and the Minis vineyards
Cadarca is a historic red grape variety with a long tradition in Romania and Central Europe, particularly in the vineyards of western Romania and Hungary, where it is commonly known as Kadarka.
The variety can produce expressive red wines combining ripe dark fruit, spices and subtle earthy nuances with fresh acidity and fine tannins.
In Romania, Cadarca is most closely associated with the historic vineyards of Minis, where the variety has become part of the local wine identity and continues to produce distinctive wines with character and regional authenticity.
Cadarca in Romania
More than 80 hectares of Cadarca are cultivated in Romania. Although its present vineyard area is relatively small, the variety remains an important part of the traditional viticultural identity of western Romania.
Cadarca is particularly associated with Crisana-Maramures and Banat, where warm summers, favourable exposures and varied soils provide suitable conditions for the grape to achieve full aromatic maturity.
One of its most important historic homes is Minis-Maderat. Wines traditionally associated with Cadarca de Minis combine ripe fruit with lively acidity, moderate tannins and spicy nuances, giving the variety an elegant and recognisable personality.
Depending on vineyard conditions and winemaking, Cadarca can range from lighter, fragrant and fruit-driven styles to deeper wines with greater structure and complexity. Romanian producers increasingly combine the historical identity of the grape with modern cellar techniques to preserve freshness while highlighting its distinctive aromatic character.
