More than 2,000 hectares of Romanian vineyards are planted with Chardonnay. Its remarkable adaptability has allowed the variety to establish itself in several contrasting wine-growing areas, producing wines that reflect both local terroir and different approaches to winemaking.

In the cooler conditions of Transylvania, Chardonnay can retain bright natural acidity and develop fresh aromas of green apple, pear and citrus. These conditions are particularly suited to elegant, vibrant styles in which freshness and fruit definition take centre stage.

Warmer areas provide a different expression. In Murfatlar, abundant sunshine encourages greater ripeness and a richer fruit profile, while Dealu Mare can produce generous, structured Chardonnay with ripe fruit and considerable depth.

Romanian winemakers use Chardonnay to create a broad spectrum of styles. Fermentation and maturation in stainless steel preserve freshness and varietal purity, while oak fermentation or barrel ageing can add texture, complexity and characteristic notes of vanilla, toast and butter.

This ability to respond to both terroir and winemaking makes Chardonnay one of Romania's most versatile international white varieties, equally capable of producing fresh, approachable wines and more ambitious, complex expressions.
