Feteasca Neagra, often heralded as Romania's crown jewel among indigenous red grape varieties, represents a remarkable combination of heritage, personality and modern winemaking potential.
With ancient roots associated with Moldova and the historic wild vines of Vitis Silvestris, the variety is believed to have been cultivated for between 1,500 and 2,000 years.
In outstanding vintages, Feteasca Neagra can produce wines of impressive depth, structure and complexity, standing comfortably alongside internationally renowned red varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon.
Feteasca Neagra in Romania
The cultivation of Feteasca Neagra extends over more than 3,300 hectares across Romania. Esteemed wine critic Jancis Robinson describes the wines as typically dry and full-bodied, with intense, complex aromas of spices and red and black fruits, particularly ripe plums, supported by tannins that become increasingly velvety with age.
While the variety's historic roots are firmly associated with Moldova, it has found particularly favourable conditions in Dealu Mare, where it frequently achieves remarkable concentration and refinement.
Feteasca Neagra is also successfully cultivated in Oltenia and Dobrogea, producing distinct interpretations shaped by local terroir, climate and winemaking philosophy.
Today, Romanian winemakers combine modern viticultural and cellar techniques with respect for the variety's heritage, helping Feteasca Neagra establish itself as one of the most recognisable symbols of contemporary Romanian wine.
