Marselan remains a rare variety in Romania, with approximately 13 hectares under vine. Although its presence is still limited, interest in the grape has grown as Romanian producers explore varieties particularly well suited to warm sites and increasingly ambitious red wine production.

Plantings can be found in several Romanian wine regions, including Muntenia, Transylvania and Dobrogea. Their contrasting soils, exposures and climatic conditions provide different environments in which producers can explore the potential of the variety.

In Romania, Marselan typically produces wines with pronounced fruit intensity, generous aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and ripe red berries, accompanied by spice and a rounded tannic structure. The variety can be bottled on its own or used in blends, where it contributes colour, fruit concentration and additional complexity.

Although Marselan represents only a very small part of Romania's vineyards today, it is an intriguing addition to the country's increasingly diverse varietal landscape. Its combination of Mediterranean character, adaptability and expressive fruit makes it a promising variety for modern Romanian red wines.
