Muscat Ottonel

One of Romania's most important and expressive aromatic white grapes

White Aromatic 8,000 ha

Muscat Ottonel is a distinguished member of the Muscat family and one of Romania's most widely cultivated aromatic white grape varieties, prized for its expressive floral and fruity character.

Typical notes of white flowers, ripe peach and citrus define its aromatic profile, while its versatility allows for styles ranging from fresh dry wines to rich late-harvest and sweet wines.

THE GRAPE

Muscat Ottonel in Romania

Muscat Ottonel is cultivated on approximately 8,000 hectares across Romania, making it one of the country's significant aromatic white grape varieties. Romania's temperate continental climate allows the grape to retain freshness while developing its characteristic floral and fruit aromas.

Important growing areas include Tarnave in Transylvania, Cotnari in Moldova and Dealu Mare in Muntenia. The different climates and soils of these vineyards allow Muscat Ottonel to express itself in a broad range of styles.

In Cotnari, the grape can produce rich and aromatic sweet wines, while the cooler conditions of Tarnave favour fresher expressions with pronounced floral aromas and lively acidity.

Muscat Ottonel is also cultivated in Murfatlar, near the Black Sea, where the warmer climate favours ripe fruit and generous aromatic intensity. From crisp dry wines to opulent sweet expressions, Muscat Ottonel demonstrates both the diversity of Romanian terroir and the remarkable versatility of the variety.
