Negru de Dragasani is a distinctive Romanian red grape variety created by crossing Negru Vartos with Saperavi, combining local viticultural heritage with the ambition to develop a modern, high-quality red variety.

The grape is intrinsically linked to the Dragasani Vineyard, where the climate and soils allow it to develop impressive colour, structure and aromatic depth.

Typical wines are deeply coloured and expressive, with aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and other dark fruits, complemented by spicy nuances and occasional notes of cocoa or chocolate.

THE GRAPE

Negru de Dragasani in Romania

Around 62 hectares of Negru de Dragasani are cultivated in Romania. Although the vineyard area remains limited, the variety has become one of the most interesting examples of modern Romanian grape breeding and a distinctive part of the country's contemporary wine identity.

Its historic home remains Dragasani in Oltenia, where it benefits from favourable hillside exposures and a long viticultural tradition.

The variety has also been planted in selected vineyards in Muntenia, Transylvania and Moldova. In each region, differences in climate, soils and vineyard management can give the wines subtly different expressions.

Modern Romanian producers use careful viticulture, controlled fermentation and thoughtful maturation to highlight the variety's naturally deep colour, generous fruit and structured tannins. Negru de Dragasani therefore represents a compelling bridge between Romanian wine tradition and modern viticultural innovation.
