Rkatsiteli

One of the world's oldest grape varieties, combining naturally high acidity, remarkable freshness and a distinctive spectrum of fruit, floral and honeyed aromas

White High acidity Ancient variety

Rkatsiteli originates in Georgia, one of the world's oldest centres of viticulture, where winemaking traditions stretch back thousands of years.

Naturally fresh and remarkably adaptable, the variety can produce wines ranging from crisp and dry to richer and sweeter styles, with characteristic notes of green apple, pear, citrus, flowers and honey.

THE GRAPE

Rkatsiteli in Romania

Rkatsiteli remains a rare presence in Romanian vineyards, particularly when compared with Georgia and other parts of Eastern Europe where this ancient variety has traditionally played a much more important role.

Nevertheless, growing interest in less conventional grape varieties and increasingly diverse approaches to winemaking have encouraged experimentation with Rkatsiteli in Romania. Its adaptability and natural resilience make it particularly interesting for areas with warm summers and sufficiently long autumns to allow the grapes to reach full aromatic maturity.

Among Romania's wine regions, Dobrogea offers particularly promising conditions. Its warm climate, abundant sunshine and extended growing season can favour complete ripening while allowing the variety to develop its characteristic aromatic complexity.

Rkatsiteli is naturally distinguished by its high acidity, which gives the wines freshness and structure. Depending on ripeness and winemaking style, its aromatic spectrum can move from crisp green apple, pear and citrus towards floral, honeyed and more complex notes as the wine develops.

The variety is also remarkably versatile at the table. Dry Rkatsiteli can accompany seafood, poultry, complex salads and aromatic or spicy dishes, while sweeter expressions can work particularly well with desserts and blue cheeses. Its combination of freshness, resilience and stylistic versatility makes Rkatsiteli an intriguing addition to Romania's increasingly diverse wine landscape.
