Approximately 690 hectares of Romanian vineyards are planted with Blaufrankisch, traditionally known in the country as Burgund Mare. The variety is particularly associated with western and central Romania, where relatively cooler growing conditions favour its natural freshness, aromatic definition and balanced ripening.

In Crisana-Maramures, Blaufrankisch benefits from the climatic character of western Romania. The variety can retain lively acidity while developing expressive dark-fruit aromas, resulting in wines that combine freshness with structure and a distinctly spicy personality.

The cooler conditions of Transylvania can offer another interpretation of the variety, emphasising freshness, aromatic precision and elegance. Blackberry, black cherry and dark berry notes may be accompanied by pepper, spice and subtle earthy nuances.

Romanian Blaufrankisch can range from supple, fruit-driven wines intended for relatively early drinking to more structured examples with greater depth and ageing potential. Careful oak maturation can add complexity and texture without obscuring the grape's naturally vibrant character.

Although less widespread in Romania than some international red varieties, Blaufrankisch represents an interesting link between Romanian viticulture and the broader wine culture of Central Europe. Its combination of freshness, dark fruit and fine structure gives the variety considerable potential in Romania's cooler wine-growing areas.
