Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc
One of the world's most distinctive white varieties, celebrated for its vibrant freshness and unmistakable aromatic character
Sauvignon Blanc is one of the world's most recognisable white grape varieties, celebrated for its remarkable freshness, aromatic intensity and distinctive character.
Lively acidity defines its wines, with typical notes of citrus, green fruit and herbs often joined by tropical fruit, creating styles ranging from crisp and mineral to intensely aromatic.
Sauvignon Blanc in Romania
Sauvignon Blanc has established a significant presence in Romanian viticulture. With approximately 5,513 hectares under vine and plantings across numerous wine-growing areas, it is one of the country's important international white varieties. Romania's considerable diversity of climates, elevations and soils allows the grape to develop distinctly different expressions from one region to another.
In Transylvania, particularly in the Tarnave and Alba vineyards, the cooler climate and elevated sites help preserve the grape's natural acidity. Sauvignon Blanc from these areas can show remarkable freshness, floral nuances and a precise, elegant aromatic profile.
Further south, Dealu Mare provides warmer conditions in which Sauvignon Blanc can develop greater fruit concentration and texture while retaining its characteristic freshness. In Dragasani, the combination of warm days, cooler nights and varied soils can produce expressive wines combining ripe fruit with floral and mineral nuances.
Sauvignon Blanc is also widely encountered in Moldova, where numerous vineyard areas offer different interpretations of the variety. In Dobrogea, the warm climate and influence of the Black Sea create another distinctive environment, producing generous yet fresh wines, sometimes marked by subtle saline and mineral impressions.
This geographical diversity makes Sauvignon Blanc particularly interesting in Romania. From cool-climate, finely aromatic wines to richer southern expressions, the variety demonstrates the breadth of the country's terroirs and the increasingly refined approach of Romanian winemakers to international grape varieties.
